Daughter of Ex- South African President Zuma Rejects Terror Allegations as Trial Starts
The child of former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she posted on online platforms in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.
A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this unrest and faces accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for ignoring a court order to appear as a witness at an inquiry into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always denied the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier describing the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly stated the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political disputes with her parent after he founded his own political party and ran against the ruling party.
Support and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and kinship persecution" against the former president and his relatives.
A few of followers from her party, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives attended the court sessions inside.
The defense has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and does not have substantial grounds for a guilty verdict.
Main Aspects of the Trial
