How a US Special Forces Vet Aided the Venezuelan Opposition Leader Flee Her Homeland
This daring getaway of Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado involved a long, frightening and soaking boat journey in the dead of night, as detailed by the US veteran who claims to have commanded the operation.
A Dangerous Nighttime Voyage
The rescue organizer, who leads a rescue nonprofit, outlined the operation in a recent interview. “It was dangerous. It was scary,” stated Stern, an ex-special forces operative, describing rough and moonless seas that also provided convenient cover for the escape.
“The ocean was perfect for our purposes, but not water you'd choose to sail on ... the higher the waves, the harder it is for radar to see,” Stern said.
He recalled rendezvousing with Machado offshore after she departed from the country, where she had been in hiding since August 2024 due to fear of persecution by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
The Detailed Extraction
She boarded his boat for a half-day journey to an secret location to catch a plane, in a mission orchestrated just days before. The operation occurred at midnight – minimal moonlight, some cloud coverage, extremely low visibility, boats have no lights. Everyone was quite damp. My crew and I were drenched. She was also chilled and wet. She had a very arduous journey,” Stern added.
Describing her condition, he commented, “She was very happy. She was very excited. She was very tired,” and noted about two dozen people were actively participating within his team.
Confirmation and Concealment
Spokespeople for Machado verified that Stern’s company was behind the operation, which began on Tuesday. This report follows previous reporting that Machado used a wig and costume to leave her hideout in a suburb of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
The veteran declined to share details about the land operation, referencing his organization's ongoing operations in the region.
Financing and American Involvement
He told media the mission was financed by “a few generous donors” – none of whom were US officials involved. Official US funds were not used, to my knowledge,” Stern asserted.
He clarified, though, that his group did coordinate informally with the US military regarding positioning and plans, largely to avoid being mistakenly fired upon.
Next Steps and Inspiration
Machado said she had American backing to depart Venezuela. She has announced plans to return home, though the specifics remain uncertain how or when.
Stern said his group would play no part in that operation, as it worked only on extracting individuals from countries, not in. “That’s for her to determine and for her to decide. But I think she should not go back. But she wants to. Maria is truly inspirational,” he said.
