Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations across the country and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a notable participant at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This new acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.
The intense energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," said one satisfied diner.
