Severe Precipitation Aggravate Conditions for Displaced Residents of Gaza, Officials Alert
Intense storms over the last seven days have compounded the already dire circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the territory, as stated by humanitarian organizations.
"Awful" Weather Poses Grave Dangers
A spokesman detailed the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with precipitation so severe that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"These conditions was truly difficult for the people. The heavy rains were so strong... And the gales were so strong," noted the spokesperson.
There is significant anxiety that children sheltering in temporary structures in soaked clothing will succumb to hypothermia and various sicknesses.
Fatalities and Significant Damage
The health ministry have stated that one baby has succumbed from exposure and at least 11 other people have been killed in structural failures due to the storms.
Other reports suggest a greater number of casualties. Authorities reported that several residential buildings had collapsed completely and scores had collapsed partially.
- Nearly 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency refuges severely flooded.
- Many people forced to relocate again.
Assistance Operations Seen as Insufficient
Organizations have stepped up distribution of tarpaulins, blankets and garments following the truce started, but they stress there is remains not enough aid getting in.
"We are operating tirelessly to provide that relief and to allocate it, but the magnitude of the needs is so immense that we are faced with thousands of people and children who are genuinely struggling nightly," warned one representative.
Long-Term Concerns and Truce Provisions
The second phase of the truce involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the withdrawal of military forces, and other conditions.
Relief organizations have highlighted the necessity for "increased and sustained relief to meet urgent and future needs."
The hostilities was triggered by an assault in the autumn of 2023. Later actions have caused a substantial number of fatalities in the region, according to medical figures.
