For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the container almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
