The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club history in a key Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
