The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, showing there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some spin while also strengthening the lower order.
But McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
